The Solent: Places to see by the sea
The Solent is the area between the Isle of Wight and the mainland of the South Coast of England. It is one of the world's most famous yachting centres, hosting such prestigious events as Cowes Week, the Round the Island Race and the Volvo Round the World Race.
Included in the area are the Hamble, Southampton Water, the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth. A key reason for the Solent's success is that it's the only place in the UK that offers sailing 12 months of the year, with sheltered waters, lovely harbours and winding rivers.
Each part of the area offers excellent pubs and restaurants. Whether you're looking for a quiet anchorage in sheltered waters or the hubbub of a lively town, the Solent won't disappoint. While the challenge of the demanding tide and piloting requirements need to be heeded, the people and the marinas in the area are always helpful and friendly, used to welcoming yachts all year round.
An outline of some favourite stops during a cruise in the Solent, starting on the East side:
Portsmouth & Gosport
Well known for its historical background, Portsmouth is home to Mary Rose (Henry VIII's flagship), The Victory (Nelson's ship at the Battle of Trafalgar) and Warrior (a 'high-tech' Victorian warship from 1860). The forts that protected the town for centuries are now used as a navigation aid. Other highlights include the various museums, the old town of Portsmouth with its pubs and restaurants, and Portchester castle, close to Port Solent.
The River Hamble
This river is the location for attractive villages such as Hamble, Warsash, Swanwick and Burseldon, the Home Port for well known racing yachts including the Volvo Challenge boats. There are also a host of enjoyable pubs and restaurants along the banks, plus seven marinas.
Southampton
This city is the place to see beautiful Ocean Cruising liners, including the QE II and the Oriana. The remains of the Medieval and Roman city and walls are well worth a visit, there are good shopping facilities and many places to eat and drink. Two excellent theatres (the Nuffield and the Mayflower) and many cinemas and clubs cater for a lively night out.
The Beaulieu River
A delightfully beautiful and peaceful river situated in a famous Nature Reserve. Many attractive anchorages can be found and Bucklers Hard houses the famous Motor museum. Beaulieu Abbey is also worth seeing and the river is great for bird watchers.
Yarmouth, Isle of Wight
An attractive little harbour and village with one of Henry VIII's Castles. Along with Lymington, Yarmouth is a good stopping place before going out of the Solent via the Needles Channel, should the tide be against you.
Newtown Creek, Isle of Wight
An isolated quiet anchorage in a nature reserve. A good place to 'get away from it all'.
Cowes and the River Medina, Isle of Wight
The well known sailing Mecca famous for Cowes Week, the Admirals Cup, the start of the Round the Island Race, as well as the Royal Yacht Squadron Yacht Club. Cowes also has an attractive and lively village atmosphere. Many quiet anchorages can be found up the Medina by Folly Inn.
Osborne Bay, Isle of Wight
Osborne House was Queen Victoria's residence following the death of Prince Albert. The Bay offers excellent shelter, although no landing is allowed on the private beach.
Wooton Creek, Isle of Wight
Another quiet anchorage, although it is quite shallow and can dry out.
Bembridge, Isle of Wight
Very quiet, pretty old harbour with moorings and a marina.
The Needles
These famous and beautiful rocks on the western side of the Isle of Wight see you out of the Solent. Be sure not to get too close (there are already too many wrecks to be found among them!) and always respect the tide when planning a passage via the Needles
